Demonstration By Margaret Glass

Demo, Margaret Glass 27 July 2019

Margaret Glass is recognized as one of the leading Pastellists of today. She is a past Vice-President of La Société des Pastellistes de Françe and a member of the English Pastel Society. For the demo she gave us a sky and seascape in pastel. She used Fisher 400, which is a sanded pastel paper, and Sennelier soft pastels. She explained how she likes to use warm and cool tones of the same colour together to create a vibrant effect, rather than the flat effect of one colour. She builds the pastel up in layers, sometimes using pure bright colours in the first layer, to be partially covered, but peeking through, the next layers. She creates an impasto effect in places by really grinding the pastel into the paper to ensure it holds fast. Rather than blending she taps the layers with her hand where she wants to achieve a smoother appearance. A very interesting demo which Margaret was unable to bring to a finish because of the usual time constraints.
