Demo, Ian McManus 28th April 2018
Ian treated us all to a lively and interesting watercolour demonstration of a street scene in Rome. As he worked from the top towards the bottom of the painting, he explained how he makes his colour washes work for him with a wet in wet approach, combined with dry brushwork for detail. He explained the importance of building in colour values and variants from distance to foreground, whilst thinking about light on dark and dark against light. He showed how to mix cool dark colours on the shady side of the street and said that we need always to show a conflict between light and dark and the soft and hard edges.
He showed us his colour palette and why he uses certain colours.
He paints on arches rough 140lb paper, and uses squirrel mop brushes and a Jackson’s Escoda brush for detail.
Ian finished his vibrant street scene with a a dry brush flourish of vehicles, people and street lights.
The whole demonstration was a wonderful treat for us all on such a cold wet April Saturday!
