Malcolm Jarvis
My interests lie in interpreting different subjects through the power of colour combined with effective composition. I paint primarily in acrylics, including mixed media, and my style is perhaps best described as realistic abstraction.
Early influences were Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Nicholas de Stael with my colour choices being in the tradition of John Blockley, Mark Leach and Casey Klahn.
Since my student days I have believed in gaining knowledge from direct observation. Drawing is very important to me and through drawing I try to explore shape and form and discover the subject’s potential for a painting.
Whatever the subject, I search for its abstract qualities, trying to create a balance between realism and abstract patterns full of strong rhythms and invention distilled from my drawings. I see the world in terms of broken lines, shapes, tonal contrasts and colour masses.
After many years, I am still searching for new ideas and methods. I am never satisfied with what I have done and I am always hoping that the next painting is going to be the best.
